The Cross and the Donkey

One day last week, I woke up with a sense of foreboding. The news today was going to be bad.

I had to remind myself this was Holy Week. I turned to a little book a friend gave me with meditations for Easter. It included a chapter about the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem, and I learned the following tidbit that I wanted to share.

“The donkey’s sacred vocation to bear Jesus is said to be represented by a dorsal cross which is found on all donkeys to this day. It is a cross of dark skin and hair that starts between the ears and continues to the tail, with a lateral mark at the shoulders…This, legend says, was imposed by God as a symbol of the donkey’s readiness to share in the burden of carrying Christ towards his cross.” I will never look at donkeys the same way.

We all have a cross to bear. By the time this column is published, it will be Easter Sunday. What a reminder despite all the darkness in our country, that we are not to despair. In fact, we are born for this moment. These are the times that try men’s and women’s souls, and we are the generation God made to be faithful to Him for such a time as this. It is our season to plant, nurture, and harvest a rebirth in goodness, wisdom, courage, and faith. Jesus said: "Upon this Rock, I Will Build My Church! And the Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail Against It!”

While evil surrounds us with hurricane force winds, we must shield ourselves in our faith. Easter is the promise that God made through his Son’s resurrection that heaven is real, that goodness, truth, and justice prevail over evil, lies, and corruption.

In my column, I’ve shared with you my insight into many moments in time where one man’s or one woman’s faith changed the course of history. I’ve also shared Sybren’s and my providential journey that brought us here. My hope is to give you hope.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that all that evil needs to grow is for good people to be silent.

Lies lose their power when the deceived become wise. The greatest country in the history of mankind is being laid low by lies. Lies gain traction because of the idiocy of the deceived. Take time to sort out the lies from the truth and speak the truth.

Lies are the source of evil’s power.

Communism tells the greatest lie of all. And what is the greatest lie? There is no absolute truth. That being the case means that man must be in charge. The state becomes god. There are no individual rights. Every individual action is ruled upon by the committee, i.e., by the collective. And only certain people are ever permitted in power.

These people would have you believe that Capitalism is always evil. They would have you believe that abolishing private property is the only way to assure equality. They would have you believe that destroying the nuclear family and lowering academic standards and bolstering social emotional education in our schools will make everyone happier. They would have you believe that their ends justifies the means, even if it violates our Constitution and Bill of Rights. They would have you believe that the Church is just a superstition.

The last lines of The Communist Manifesto are these: “[We} openly declare that [our] ends can be attained only by forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communist revolution. The Proletariat [wage earners] have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries, unite!”

Our country is surrounded and infiltrated by these lies. To end the hurricane of evil we, must be willing to stand in our faith, unashamed and lovingly speak the truth. Let our faith as it says in Ephesians be our shield. Pay attention to what is happening.

Happy Easter and remember that even donkeys bear their cross. Now, let’s bear ours.
