Happenings on the Way to Heaven

As my inaugural column, I will be sweet and concise.

Our Lord God in Heaven is touching the hearts of many in Washington, County.

Here is one way that I know.

My husband and I moved here eleven months ago. We bought the place that used to be called the Chappell Chill in old Washington. We fixed it up and renamed it the Texas Heritage Event Center. We are almost ready for our grand opening, but I keep thinking of things I need to do first. Mainly, I want to get to know our community and want them to get to know us. I want to figure out how we can serve best.

Being transplanted to the beautiful birthplace of Texas from Houston (where I used to be a teacher and business owner), I wanted to teach things that are near and dear to my heart. One of those things is our Constitution and history of our founding fathers, but I didn’t know how I could make this happen as I knew but three people here.

One of those people was Dale Ramey, owner of The Bluebonnet House. Our friendship quickly took off, and I told her my dream and she said, “Oh, I have been after Bennie for years to teach a class on the Constitution.”

“Whose Bennie?” I asked.

“She works for me, but she used to teach U. S. History for 30 years,” Dale said. “Now, I need to get you two together.”

So, the rest is history, as they say. The Lord prompted me to share my ideas, and Dale received it and the three of us ran with it.

We started our class on August 22 and it ran for eight sessions. It was called “Biblical Citizenship,” and we used the curriculum provided by Patriot Academy and supplemented it with our knowledge and experience. We taught the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the biblical principles that our founding fathers “baked” into those documents. Bennie and I had 22 students sign up and most had a perfect attendance, I am proud to say. I think the oldest student was in her 80s.

Imagine my astonishment then, when I went to the Texas Leadership Summit in October and discovered that Pastor Tim Webb’s church at Champion Fellowship also taught a Biblical Citizenship class. Then I learned that the Cowboy Church also had a Biblical Citizenship class.  All three Biblical Citizenship classes began on the same day and none of us knew about each other. That must be the Lord’s timing. His timing is always perfect.

He hears our prayers and answers them. Happenings on the way to Heaven will cover ways we can strengthen our community through our reliance on His Word. We just must trust Him and listen.
